The company was formed in 1995 to buy key assets of general aviation pioneer Piper Aircraft, which had declared bankruptcy in 1991. (The Piper Cub, a WWII-era trainer, was Piper Aircraft`s best-known product.) Investment firm American Capital Strategies acquired a controlling stake in New Piper in 2003.
